Okinawa is a subtropical group of islands at the southern-most end of Japan. It’s most famous of course for its tragic WWII history and subsequent American occupation (it only reverted back to Japanese control in 1972, with a large and controversial presence still remaining in the form of bases) but it also has a native cultural history and traditions separate from mainland Japanese stretching back hundreds of years. And also some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!
